For this project we had to come up with a design concept in response to design competition brief. We went to the Design Museum where we attended an ideas generating workshop. I used the what I had learn and applied in to help my respond to the Fashion/Textiles brief.
I think that my final idea is successful in answering a brief; wearable tech which give visitors a sense of togetherness and connects then to other visitors and the exhibition. I think that my design sheets are also successful. I think it communicates how I got from my research to my final design concept and my thought process well. I however I have a few struggles on the way. The first was when I had 3 idea, deciding which idea was the best and most original and answered the brief. In order to over come this I asked other students what they thought about my ideas. This helped me to decide which idea I would develop. The second struggle I overcome was developing my idea. At first I could not thing of how my design concept could improved. To overcome this used my prototype and imaged myself as a visitor using the product. I put myself in different situations so that I could find the problems with the product and improve it. If I was to go back and redo the project again. I think I would research more into different materials and their properties and also the costing. Looking back I think these are important factors that when designing I sort of missed. Overall I am happy with the outcome and with the fact able to improve my problem solving skills along the way.

I stated off with 3 idea inspired and developed from my visual research Idea 1: This idea was inspired by the interactive floors. Idea 2: The idea was inspired by the textiles switches on the jacket and the fit bit. Idea 3: This idea was inspired by the interactive wall and CuteCircuit fashion concept. PrototypeS.C.A.M.P.E.RThis is where creative brainstorming techniques which helps you generate ideas for new products and services by making you to think about how you could improve existing ones. DevelopmentAfter making my prototype I realised the headphone wire
Smart TextilesCuteCircuit Is an internationally-known fashion house that has been pushing the boundaries of wearable technology since its launch in 2004. A global leader in interactive fashion, CuteCircuit has introduced many ground-breaking ideas to the fashion world by integrating new beauty and functionality through the use of smart textiles and micro-electronics. I chose to look at the these designers because they are mixing the digital world and textiles. What draw my attention was the way a phone app is all that is needed to change the deign on the clothing which I think can completely change the look of a garment. We are living in a digital future, so we do not need to sell 10,000 skirts, we could sell 500 skirts, but then could sell thousands of patterns that you download to your skirt." It allows for women (target audience) to express their mood depending on the atmosphere and situation without the hassle of changing ones outfit. I think the main things they would have to consider is the material they use embedding nanotechnology - Thousands of tiny micro LEDs can be woven into fabrics), health and safety, hygiene (washable), comfort and cost. I think the designs/idea is successful. because it avant-garde in terms of the concept, it been in the media and celebrities have been seen wearing it to event. I don't think any improvements can be made. http://cutecircuit.com/aw-14-15/#after_full_slider_1 http://www.dezeen.com/2014/08/29/movie-francesca-rosella-cutecircuit-digital-fashion-smart-textiles/ Textiles switches Smart switches are button on the sleeves of a jacket which allows you to control music/mobile device without any contact with device. I chose this design because I looks at the daily life of people and tried to make it a little easier. People love listening to music when but it can be a hassle to taking out your device to stop/pause or change the music. This design removes the inconvenience. For the design the main things that would have been considered would be material, cost, effeminacy, durability and how the jacket will be cleaned and health and safety. I think the design is successful as it meet the need of it audience but I think I can developed so that its not only on jackets but other items of clothing. Interactive wallpaper Nature Trail, the interactive LED wallpaper, makes boring walls so much more fun, installed at the UK’s Great Ormond Street children’s hospital to make the journey to surgery a little less scary for kids (newborn to around 18 years old) and their parents alike. "The brief was to design and install a distraction artwork helping to create a calming yet engaging route that culminates in the patient’s arrival at the anaesthetic room. Inspiration came from the idea of viewing the patient journey as a ‘Nature Trail’, where the hospital walls become the natural canvas, with digital look out points that reveal the various ‘forest creatures’, including horses, deer, hedgehogs, birds and frogs, to the passerby." When designing this they would have had to consider the target audience, materials, cost, where and how it will be installed. I think that the design is really successful because its taking something that is boring and adding a fun element to it. Object that are interactive are fun and fascinating for all ages, abilities. I think that the deign needs improving http://coolmompicks.com/blog/2013/01/04/resolutions-for-parents-interactive-wallpaper/ http://www.jasonbruges.com/projects/uk-projects/nature-trail Interactive Floor thertFader is an interactive flooring manufactured by TAL. A pedestrian’s footprints light up wherever the foot touches the surface and remain visible for about a minute after crossing the interactive light-floor. The LightFader interactive floor consists of a modular system of tiles. These tiles measures 1000 x 1000 x 75 mm, easily connected by a link cable, and are made of a strong and scratch-resistant material that can hold up to 250 kg per square meter. This is a similar concept to the interactive wall. There is one particular or set target audience. I find it interesting because it works with human interaction and without interaction it would be like a normal floor (or wall) Both the interactive wall and floor have inspired to think about boring everyday objects and think about other ways it can be used to promote interacts between people and objects and among other people. Textiles DesignersFausto Puglisi "Fausto Puglisi has a confident, energetic style, with a modern attitude and frisson of sexiness, this original fashion combination has had combustive results, quickly drawing the attention of international editors and buyers and catapulting Puglisi into the spotlight as one of the industry’s brightest fashion talents. Puglisi’s work is a study in bold contrasts and reflects both his Italian origins as well as his fascination with all facets of American culture" I chose this to looks at the designer as I like the idea of combing different styles. I like his that colour pallet he is using and they he have used geometric shapes for the embellishment Santu Maaranen .Satu Maaranen is a Fashion Designer specialized on hand-painted prints and sculptural shapes. I chose this designer as I like the colour palette she uses in her designs, and the futuristic effect that is gives. I could also use a slimier color palette for my design Both designers would have had to consider the materials they are using, colour palette, cost, and target audience. Wearable Tech ProductSamsung watch "Gear s2 comes with a durable stainless steel body that sits sim and sleek on your wrist. You can customise the watch face and changing that band is a lot easier. It is a device for all occasions. Essential smartphone features are available with a simple twist on Gear S2. Gently turn the bezel to scroll through long emails, zoom in on a map or skip a track during playback. When it's time for a recharge, simply place it on the wireless charging dock. It has enough space to store 300 songs synced seamlessly from your phone." I chose this design/product to because I like the concept of making everyday tasks a little bit easier. I think that design is successful visually. It look simple and easier to used. During the design process they would have to consider durability, target audience, materials, cost and effectiveness. Google glass Google Glass is a headset, or optical head-mounted display, that is worn like a pair of eyeglasses, It displays information in a smartphone-like hands-free format. Wearers communicate with the Internet via natural language voice command. Features include current events, such as weather, past events, such as phone calls, photos, circle updates. Its also has a camera that takes pictures and recodes videos. During the design process they would have to consider durability, target audience, materials, cost, effectiveness, health and safety, security and how it works. I think that the design/product is not as successful its it may seem. I like the idea and concept behind it but there as been criticisms about security and privacy. To me the product to me seems to be promoted as if it was intend for the main stream market however this has not happened. FitBit "Every moment matters and every bit makes a big impact. Becausefitness is the sum of your life. That’s the idea Fitbit was built on—that fitness is not just about gym time. It’s all the time."
I chose this to look at this product because I like the idea of how wearable technology can be connected to a smartphone. I also really like the visual design as it can fit with any outfit. overall I think the design is successful. During the design process they would have to consider durability, target audience, materials, cost, effectiveness, health and safety, security and how it works. Before I start looking at the brief I wanted to follow for the competition, we got into groups and looks at one the brief and come up with some ideas.
We went to the Design Museum were we attended a workshop in which we learnt about creative problem solving. We first looked at how ideas are generated. We looked at product and discussed weather they are designed instinctively or analytical and weather or not are functional. We then went on to looking at objects and finding letters. I learnt that anything can be into a form of inspiration and you don't have to actively be looking to be inspired. We then went on to working in small groups, given a scenario and had to come up with design ideas in order to solve the problem. Our Scenario: "When I get ready for a night out, I'll often wear a dress or outfit with no pockets. I hate carrying a clutch or a bag; it so annoying if you're dancing or holding a drink, but I can't go out for a night without my keys, phone, travel card and some money. Identifying the problem & target audience: Women 18+ going out, having fun at parties, clubs etc wearing clothing with no storage/pockets. They don't want to carry bags or clutches but cant go without the essentials ( our designs were for a small set of keys, oyster card and money - notes) Design Ideas/solutions: For our deign ideas we looked at it from two angles; designing a new product and re-designing a product that already exists. Our first new product/idea we were thinking of Jewelry more specifically bracelets , We came up with the idea of a pouch that doubles up as an fashionable piece of Jewelry and that be worn of the arm. Our second product we came up with the idea of a removable pouch - so it can be transferred from one dress to another - which is attached to the inside of the dress. For our third idea we started looking products that already exists. As group we thought of ideas that we all wear and one of the first things we thought of was shoes. We came up with the idea of a hidden compartment in the shoes. Depending on the style of the shoes. this could either be in the heal, sole or the inside of the shoe. Again looking at ready existing project we came up with the idea of a hair clip that will have a section that opens to store the belonging. Using this idea we then made a model/prototype. We made the model using card, fabric and play dough. If it was to be made we would have to think about; the types of materials used, How the compartment will be closed so the things inside are secure and wont fall out, cost and size. We already know that size of the compartment will have to be the size of an oyster card depth will be so that a oyster card a key or two and a few folded notes fit. This mean that the over all would have to be bigger then this. What I have learn from this session? The first thing I learn and will take way from this session is that that is no wrong or right design idea when coming up with a solution as long as the deign meet the requirements. I also learnt that often a deign solution may not always solve the entire problem. For example in the scenario we got a phone was mention. As we can see today the size of the phone is increasing and non of out deigns were designed to carry or store a phone. |
